White Coat Ceremony: Nugent accepted into Grandview Nursing program

Vinton-Shellsburg alum Rachel Nugent has been accepted into the nursing program at Grandview University. She and several others participated in the White Coat Ceremony at Grandview this weekend. The ceremony marks the successful completion of the pre-nursing program. Nugent, a 2016 Vinton-Shellsburg graduate, plans to graduate with a BSN in Nursing and become an RN upon graduation in 2020.

VS and ISU communities mourn death of Monica Huelman Zaruba

Monica (Huelman) Zaruba, who earned fame on the basketball court in Vinton and at Iowa State University, has died following a brief illness. She was 40. Monica, the daughter of Ken and Regina Huelman, died at 1 a.m. Sunday after being hospitalized for a week, Ken announced on his Facebook page. "We love her so much and are proud of her accomplishments during her short life," says Ken, who also added a word of thanks for all the kind words the family has received.

North Eden Willing Workers 4-H Minutes

By Tressa Walton November meeting The meeting of the North Eden Willing Workers 4-H group was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on November 5th, 2017. The meeting was called to order by Caroline Lang at 5:30 p.m. Roll call was answered by 26 members. Minutes of the previous meeting were not read and approved. The treasurer's report was given.

American Legion to hold Fish Fry

Vinton's American Legion will be holding a Fish Fry, on Friday, December 8th from 5-7:00 p.m. The American Legion is located at 105 N R Ave. in Vinton. Spread a little cheer their way, and support our Veterans!

Christmas giving opportunity: Koop's Auto

Jeremy Koopman and his staff have set up the Christmas tree and are now collecting gifts to present to the families served by Horizons. Now located at the corner of 8th St. and K Ave. (Highway 218), Koop's will collect toys through Dec. 18. This has been an annual tradition for the business for many years.

The winter weather arrived this week, as this snowman seems to indicate. Many local residents have been decorating their yards and homes for the holiday season. Santa, however does not seem to mind the cold.

Horst to be among those Awarded a Degree from Minnesota State University

Minnesota State University, Mankato will award 1,817 degrees at the end of the fall semester, with commencement ceremonies scheduled for 9 a.m. and noon Saturday, Dec. 9 in Taylor Center's Bresnan Arena on the Minnesota State Mankato campus. Graduates of the College of Arts & Humanities, College of Business and College of Science, Engineering and Technology will participate in a 9 a.

The Iowa 4-H Foundation and Hills Bank and Trust Co. open its annual leadership grant program for students who will be seniors in the fall of 2018. The Iowa 4-H Foundation and Hills Bank and Trust Company 2018 Leadership Grant applications are now open for current high school juniors. For the past 17 years, Hills Bank & Trust Company has partnered with the Iowa 4-H Foundation to provide college scholarship opportunities for Iowa youth who reside in the bank's service area.
